Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon Releasing in May

As speculated before, the upcoming standalone expansion to Far Cry 3 will be releasing this May.  A new trailer featuring some excellent Saturday morning styled cutscenes, VHS tracking lines, and gameplay footage has been posted.  I’m getting more and more excited for this game with every little tease being released.  Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon features the voice of Michael Biehn as protagonist Sergeant Rex Power Colt in an future from the past.  The year is 2007 and the nostalgia is cranked to high with references to several classics from the 80s (most notably probably being The Terminator).  The new trailer is below:

One Hell of a Night: Evil Dead Review

Recycling old ideas has been a common thing in Hollywood recently with more and more big budget remakes/reboots of classics or sequels in established franchises sprouting up all over the place.  Sometimes it works, reintroducing a classic idea to a new audience with more modern themes and effects; sometimes it doesn’t with losing sight of what exactly it was that made the classic great.  Horror movies aren’t immune to this revisiting of existing properties and the latest horror reboot is this year’s Evil Dead.  A reenvisioning of Sam Raimi’s horror classic, this new Evil Dead eschews the camp and comedy of the original two films in favor of a pure, gritty, gory horror romp through evil infested woods.

The film starts out strong with a prologue that has a father trying to purge his daughter of the evil that possesses her.  From there, viewers are brought to a familiar cabin in the woods where a group of friends is gathered to help Mia (Jane Levy) through her detox.  The setup provides the promise of some emotional character depth, but it’s quickly lost after it becomes quickly apparent that the story only cares about Mia and her distanced brother David (Shiloh Fernandez).  It’s somewhat disappointing that all this promise is lost amidst horror movie clichés, but you soon forget about it when you realize just how well they did the tension and jump scares—it’s also impossible to deny just how fun all the over-the-top gore is.  In the end, though, the bit about the estranged brother and his recovering sister works out because those characters are the ones that stand out the most, so when something bad happens, you feel it—everyone else is fodder, so you’re really just waiting for them to die.

The script isn’t particularly strong, but it gets the job done.  The writers surely had a ball constructing this new vision, but it is somewhat weighted down by clichés.  Characters do ridiculously foolish things if only for the reason to put themselves in a situation where one of them has to die—but, as a viewer, you don’t really care because that’s really what you paid $8 to see.

It’s also worth noting that in spite of not being campy or over-the-top in its presentation of humor, this new Evil Dead has its own charms.  The humor isn’t quite as apparent as it’s much more tongue-in-cheek and morbid than the original films.  There’s one scene in particular that was brutally gruesome, but I couldn’t help but let out a solid laugh—a reaction I’m sure they were hoping for.

Evil Dead is built on the ideas of the classic films, but brings to the table several of its own.  There are scenes that feel incredibly familiar, but then you’re thrown a completely unexpected (and pleasantly gruesome) curveball that freshens up the formula.  This remake/reboot is a welcome entry in the franchise and the genre as a whole and, while it is more of a “pure” horror film, it does have moments that echo the charm of the originals.  Fans of The Evil Dead and horror in general will be more than pleased with what Evil Dead has to offer.

Elysium Trailer

A trailer for Neill Blomkamp’s upcoming science fiction film Elysium has been released.  This is Blomkamp’s first filme since his 2009 feature film debut with the Academy Award nominated District 9.  Elysium stars Matt Damon and is scheduled for an August 9 release this year.

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon Details

Upcoming standalone add-on/spin-off to last year’s Far Cry 3 may be released on May 1, 2013–just 3 short weeks away–and will feature the voice talent of 80s movie star Michael Biehn.  The game was announced officially earlier this month with a VHS-styled teaser that hints at all of the wonderful 80s-ness of this game.  The synopsis that was pulled from the Xbox website (which has since been removed) is equally awesome:

Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon is THE Kick-Ass Cyber Shooter taking place on a bizarre open-world island crawling with evil. Welcome to an 80’s VHS vision of the future. The year is 2007 and you are Sargent Rex Colt, a Mark IV Cyber Commando who’s fighting against a cyborg army gone rogue. Your mission: get the girl, kill the baddies, and save the world. Experience every cliché of a VHS era vision of a nuclear future, where cyborgs, blood dragons, mutants, and Michael Biehn (TerminatorAliensNavy Seals) collide.

Someone also dumped glorious 80s awesomeness all over the box art, as well:

I’m more than a little excited about this upcoming retro-inspired open-world experience, so I’ll be sure to post more when new information is available.

Batman: Arkham Origins Announced

It’s official:  a prequel to the Arkham games has been announced.  The game is set to take place before both Arkham Assylum and Arkham City and is being developed by Warner Bros. Montreal.  The first two installments of the franchise were developed by Rocksteady Games.  This change shouldn’t drastically change the property as WB Montreal is familiar with the Arkham franchise having ported Arkham City to the WiiU.  Batman: Arkham Origins will be released on current-gen home consoles and PC on October 25, 2013.

In addition to Arkham Origins, an additional prequel game is being developed for 3DS and Vita.  Titled Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate, this portable entry in the franchise will take place after the events of its home console counterpart.  Blackgate is being developed by Armature Studios, which was formed by staff from Nintendo’s Retro Studio (developer of the Metroid Prime series and Donkey Kong Country Returns).  The game will be a 2.5D Metroid-vania style game and is set to release alongside Arkham Origins.
