Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Teaser

ABC has signed Joss Whedon’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for full season this fall.  I don’t think there was really any doubt that it would happen, but now we’ve got confirmation and a teaser trailer for the upcoming show set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  The show follows the events of last years The Avengers and promises the return of Agent Phil Coulson.  There’s been a lot of hubbub about how he lived after he was supposedly killed in The Avengers, but that’s a mystery that will surely be solved this fall when Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. comes to the small screen this fall on ABC.  Until then, just know that Coulson Lives.

Kevin Conroy Absent as Batman in “Arkham Origins”

Arkham Origins developer WB Montreal has passed on casting Kevin Conroy, who has voiced Batman in multiple titles since Batman: The Animated Series, as Batman in the upcoming videogame.  WB Montreal stated that since Arkham Origins is an origin story featuring Bruce Wayne in his younger years, they’re looking for someone younger to fill the role.  While fans of Conroy’s voice work as the caped crusader will be disappointed, it is understandable that they’d cast an actor with a younger sounding voice to portray Batman in his earlier years.  No news as to whether or not Mark Hamill will reprise his role as The Joker.

Michael Bay’s Ninja Turtles Are NOT Aliens

In an interview about his most recent film, Pain & Gain, Michael Bay addressed concerns regarding his upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot.  Rumors have been circulating since the film’s announcement that the Teenage, Mutant, and Turtles part of the title were misleading as it was believed the beloved characters were aliens and not mutated turtles; the film’s original title, Ninja Turtles, was further indication that the titular characters may be aliens.

However, Michael Bay has clarified that the crime fighting reptiles remain true to their roots as turtles mutated by the ooze:

There was that quote saying that we’re making [the Ninja Turtles as] aliens. We’re not. It’s the ooze! It’s from the original source material. These are from the original writers, and I never went out to correct myself in the press. I do listen to the fans and I do want this to be authentic. I think they’re going to be really happy with this movie.

The film’s title has officially been changed to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Microsoft may Resurrect Series “Heroes”

Despite reception of the superhero show Heroes having a steady decline following its first season all the way to its end, rumors are circulating that Microsoft may bring the show back in a new iteration as an Xbox exclusive series.  This new vision of Heroes will feature new characters with the original cast being confined to cameos.

While it’s been no secret that Microsoft has been interested in creating Xbox-specific programming, one has to wonder if pursuing Heroes is really wise.  Having an existing brand can be good marketing when it’s a big name, but the IP lost its following and now isn’t very highly regarded.  Right now this is all just speculation, but maybe Microsoft can restore the show to its former glory with a new cast of heroes and accompanying story arc.

Batman: Arkham Origins Announced

It’s official:  a prequel to the Arkham games has been announced.  The game is set to take place before both Arkham Assylum and Arkham City and is being developed by Warner Bros. Montreal.  The first two installments of the franchise were developed by Rocksteady Games.  This change shouldn’t drastically change the property as WB Montreal is familiar with the Arkham franchise having ported Arkham City to the WiiU.  Batman: Arkham Origins will be released on current-gen home consoles and PC on October 25, 2013.

In addition to Arkham Origins, an additional prequel game is being developed for 3DS and Vita.  Titled Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate, this portable entry in the franchise will take place after the events of its home console counterpart.  Blackgate is being developed by Armature Studios, which was formed by staff from Nintendo’s Retro Studio (developer of the Metroid Prime series and Donkey Kong Country Returns).  The game will be a 2.5D Metroid-vania style game and is set to release alongside Arkham Origins.

Penny Arcade 4 Concludes Story This Spring

Zeboyd Games will release the final installment of the Penny Arcade game series this spring.  The franchise began with Hothead Games’ 2008 release of On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness: Episode 1 and went on hiatus for several years after the third game was cancelled by Hothead; after which, Zeboyd stepped in and released Rain-Slick 3 on Windows PC and XBOX Live Indie Games (XBLIG) in 2012.  The third installment of the franchise was a departure from Hothead’s two Penny Arcade releases featuring “retro” art and gameplay styles.

Zeboyd worked with an outline for their first Penny Arcade game and were creatively limited with what they could do regarding narrative.  For Penny Arcade On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness 4, Zeboyd conferred with Jerry Holkins to develop a narrative where the developer had more creative freedom.

Another change to this installment in the franchise is more freedom for the players.  Zeboyd’s Robert Boyd said, “[F]ans complained that they felt that the third game was too linear…. [W]e’ve added more optional areas in the fourth game and… more secrets and secondary routes….”  The overworld of Rain-Slick 4 will be freely explorable, the dungeons feature multiple paths, and the gameplay has been tweaked to encourage more diversity in gameplay so that players don’t stick with a single strategy.

Penny Arcade On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness 4 begins after “the world has been destroyed” and players are “thrust into the last pocket of existence – the Underhell.”  Players will be able to experience the end of this saga on PC or XBLIG when the game releases this spring for $4.99 (400 MSP).
